Step 1:5 Obtain Your EIN & Business Licenses
You need an Employer Identification Number (EIN) to use as your business credit identity. You also need the proper licensing from your City, County, or State.
Obtain Your EIN & Business Licenses
In this section you will complete the following:
- Obtain your EIN Number (employer identification number)
- Obtain any required licenses (City, County, State)

Your EIN & Business Licenses
Your EIN is used by the IRS for tax purposes, but this 9 digit number will also be used to create a business credit file with each of the business credit reporting agencies.
You will be using your EIN when you open a business bank account, apply for business credit and many other business related transactions.
If you already have an EIN, you may still need a new one if:
- Your business is subject to bankruptcy proceeding.
- You form a new corporation or change the corporation name.
- You take in new business partners and operate as a partnership.
- You purchase, or inherit, and plan to operate an existing business.

Obtain Your EIN
In Step 1.1 you were instructed to incorporate your business. Now that you have your entity formed you need to apply for an EIN.

Obtain Your Business Licenses
One of the most common mistakes when building credit for your company is non-matching business addresses on your business licenses. Even worse is not having the “required” licenses for your type of business to operate legally.
You will need to contact your State, County, and City Government offices to see if there are any required licenses and permits to operate your type of business. You can contact them directly via phone or search their website to confirm if there are any required licenses or permits for your type of business.
For example if you start a home based business some cities may require that you have a license, while others may not.
